Understanding
What is a birth chart?
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It shows which sign of the zodiac the Sun, the Moon and each of the planets were in, as well as the sign rising on the horizon: the Ascendant.
Each placement sheds light on a facet of your personality: Mercury, the way you think and communicate; Venus, the way you love; Mars, your drive to act. The houses, meanwhile, place these energies in the different areas of your life: relationships, work, home, creativity…
More than a label, your chart is a map of your inner resources: a tool for self-knowledge, to explore with curiosity and kindness.
The “big three”: Sun, Moon, Ascendant
Three landmarks light up the essentials of your birth chart. The Sun reveals your conscious identity, what drives you and makes you shine. The Moon speaks of your inner world: your emotional needs, what soothes you and restores your energy. The Ascendant, or rising sign, describes the doorway to your personality, the first impression you give and the way you approach life. Together, they paint a nuanced and unique portrait.

Frequently asked questions
How can I calculate my rising sign for free?
Enter your date, time and place of birth in the calculator above. Your rising sign (or ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the precise moment of your birth: without a time and place, it cannot be determined reliably.
I don't know my time of birth. What can I do?
You can still get your Sun sign, the positions of the planets and, in most cases, your Moon sign. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, birth certificates usually don't show the time (except for twins and multiple births), whereas Scottish certificates do. Ask your family, look for a baby book or hospital card, or request your birth records from the hospital where you were born.
Is my birth data stored?
No. The calculation is carried out on the fly on our servers and the result is sent straight back to you: nothing is saved, and your place of birth is never passed on to any third-party service, because our database of cities is built in.
My Sun sign is different from what I thought. Is that normal?
Yes, it can happen if you were born “on the cusp”, on the border between two signs. The dates of the signs shift by a day from one year to the next: our calculator uses the actual position of the Sun at the moment of your birth, which gives the exact result.
